Paul Gascoigne is once again looking for team to play for after his dream of playing Major League Soccer in America was cut short.
Gascoigne and DC United have agreed not to pursue contract talks, the club announced on its web site last night.
Gascoigne, 35, had been training with the American east coast club for the past week.
"After long and involved discussions and having thoroughly considered all matters regarding a permanent, long-term move to DC United and Major League Soccer, both United head coach Ray Hudson and Paul Gascoigne have mutually agreed not to pursue a contractual obligation for the remainder of the 2002 MLS season," said United technical director Dave Kasper.
Gascoigne, capped 57 times for his country, closed last season playing for Burnley following an injury-hit stint at Everton.
The 1990 World Cup semi-finalist began his career with Newcastle before joining Tottenham for Stg£2 million in 1988.
A £5.5 million switch to Lazio followed in 1992 as he made his name as one of the world's most gifted playmakers.
However, a successful spell in Scotland with Rangers which followed that move to the Continent was ended when he joined Middlesbrough for #3.45million in 1998 and Gascoigne has been troubled by injuries ever since.
Just where Gazza will spend the twilight years of his rollercoaster career remains to be seen.
