Geisha in Ireland

Dublin is to get a dramatic, new sculpture

Dublin is to get a dramatic, new sculpture. The Mexican government is to donate a 20-foot high, modern work of art, and talks between the new ambassador, Agust∅n Basave, and the OPW are currently underway to choose a location. It will arrive from Tokyo, where it is currently on exhibit, in February.

The work of art by Sebastian - a renowned Mexican sculptor - measures 600cm x 294cm x 237cm and is in painted metal. Named Geisha while on display in Japan, it will be called An Cail∅n Bβn here, and locations under discussion include the Liffey quayside at the Financial Services Centre, Farmleigh House and one of the roundabouts in the Phoenix Park.

The decision to donate the work was initiated by the ambassador, who is an old friend of the artist. Basave, unusually for an ambassador, is a temporary diplomat, being both a politician and a writer.
