One German tourist has died and another was missing last night after a boating accident in Co Fermanagh.

The two men had hired a cruiser for a weekend fishing on lower Lough Erne. The boat and the body of one man were discovered on rocks on a small island off Crevenis haughey Island in the lough at about 10 a.m. yesterday.

When the second man was not found a search began.

An RNLI inshore lifeboat, police boat, British army helicopter and a number of private boats were involved in the search, but by nightfall they had not found the man.

It is believed the men hired the boat on Friday evening and were last seen at about 8 p.m. on Saturday. Locals helping in the search said the two men were experienced boatsmen who had been visiting the area since 1988. They believed the missing man had attempted to use a motor dinghy to take the boat off the rocks.

Later in the search, the army helicopter discovered a lifebelt floating.

An RUC spokesman said the force had contacted Interpol and the German authorities to inform the men's families.
