More than two-thirds of Germans would like to see a pause in US-led air strikes on Afghanistan so food-aid can reach refugees, according to an opinion poll released today.
The poll by the Forsa institute said 69 per cent of Germans wanted the pause so aid can be delivered to refugees and hunger victims in Afghanistan, Die Wochemagazine said in a press release.
It said the view was shared across the political spectrum in Germany.
Only 41 per cent of Germans backed Chancellor Mr Gerhard Schroeder's stance of total solidarity with the US over the military strikes, while 55 per cent would like to see the German government adopt an independent position.
A total of 60 per cent were against Germany putting troops on the ground in Afghanistan, according to the poll of 1,013 Germans undertaken during October 18-19.
