THE eldest daughter of the former Mid-Ulster MP and civil rights activist, Ms Bernadette McAliskey, will appear before a London Magistrates' Court today. She will face an extradition hearing in connection with an IRA bombing of a British army base in Germany.
Ms Roisin McAliskey (25) flew to London under police guard yesterday afternoon and is being held at the top-security Paddington Green police station. She will appear at Bow Street Magistrates' Court this morning. German authorities will argue she was part of a five-member IRA gang which attacked the base in June.
It is expected that Ms Bernadette McAliskey, who is already in London for a political meeting, will attend the hearing. Her daughter was arrested last Wednesday and has been held at Castlereagh Detention Centre in Belfast. A warrant for her extradition was sworn at Bow Street Magistrates' Court on Monday.
If extradition is granted, Ms McAliskey will face charges of attempted murder and explosives offences. No one was seriously injured in the mortar attack on the Osnabruck barracks. Three mortars were fired but only one landed in the base. It was the first IRA attack in mainland Europe following the end of the ceasefire in February.
German authorities have already named two men whom they also want to question about the attack.
One is from Northern Ireland and the second, a former British soldier, is now believed to be living in the Republic.
