The death has taken place of a former INTO general secretary, Mr Gerry Quigley.
Formerly a teacher in the Falls Road, Belfast, he was appointed Northern secretary of the INTO in 1953.
He was appointed general secretary in 1978.
He restructured the INTO and introduced training for staff representatives at school level.
Under his leadership, a monthly publication for teachers was produced, the first handbook for INTO members was published and the first annual education conference was held.
He also played a prominent role in the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. He was a member of the executive council from 1978 and in 1988 was elected unopposed to the post of national president.
He played a key role in designing and negotiating the national agreement of that year, the Programme for National Recovery.
