An inquest into the death of the Co Galway murder victim Philomena Gillane was adjourned yesterday on the request of Supt Gerard Clifford, of Mullingar on the grounds investigations into her death were continuing.

She was shot in the back and stabbed six times with a kitchen steak knife, the inquest into her death was told last night. The inquest stands adjourned to June 24th, 1999. A jury of 10 sitting with Westmeath County Coroner, Dr Pat Mangan, agreed with the medical evidence the seven months pregnant mother died from haemorrhage and shock as a result of a shotgun wound followed by the inflicting of stab wounds to her back carried out by another person.
