A five-year-old girl will be paid €3.675 million in a settlement against an obstetrician and the Coombe maternity hospital in Dublin.
Amy Flynn from Drimnagh in Dublin was born at the hospital in August 1999.
Her mother, Ms Ann Marie Flynn, who took an action for alleged negligence against obstetrician Prof Charles Murray and the hospital, claimed the child developed cerebral palsy and had other personal injuries as a result of negligence by the defendants.
The settlement was approved by the High Court and was made without an admission of liability on the part of the defendants.
According to Amy's medical experts, she will probably never feed orally, laugh, smile, hear, walk, never sit up properly or recognise her environment. She is quadriplegic and suffers from epilepsy. She has endured great pain and suffering and was close to dying a couple of times in her first year, the judge heard.
Amy also has up to ten doses of medication a day and has a special drink formula, which is her main source of food. She must be sedated at night and sleeps in a special sleep-system.
