A teenage girl has been remanded in custody for her own safety after a court heard that her 38- year-old boyfriend was a convicted sex offender.

Previously the 15-year-old girl, who is facing charges at the Dublin Children's Court for assaulting care workers in a care home, had been warned that she would be taken into custody if she continued to see the man.

In May she had been released from custody after pledging to have no contact with the man. She had also been ordered to comply with a welfare programme for her in a Dublin care home. Judge Catherine Murphy heard yesterday that the girl has continued to see the man, had not co-operated with care workers and had assaulted two of them.

Det Sgt Thomas Forsyth of Blackrock Garda station said that last week he stopped a taxi in which the girl and the man were travelling. The girl was taken from the taxi and returned to the care home.
