The man in a hurry and the o.t.t. Celtic sweater, right, is David P. Schippers, chief investigator for the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives and a leading figure in the impeachment of President Clinton. He is involved in the Senate trial as a legal adviser to the prosecutors and wore this sweater on his way to meet Monica Lewinsky in Washington recently.

Despite the attire, Schippers is not Irish. And, oddly, given his role in pursuing the president, he is a Democrat, from Chicago. He was asked by his old friend, Henry Hyde, the Republican Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, to come to Washington for the temporary job with the committee. He worked for Robert Kennedy in the US Justice Department in the 1960s and played a leading role in combating crime and racketeering in Chicago. He is a devout Catholic and a Papal Knight. He once thought of becoming a priest but soon decided that "women are not just soft boys". He has 10 children and 25 grandchildren.
