Low-fares airlines easyjet and Go have announced a £374 million sterling merger that will create Europe’s largest low-fares airline.

Plans for integration of the two airlines under the brand easyJet have been under way for some time. The process is expected to last 18 months, with the airline's base yet to be decided.

In a statement this morning, the company said customers would see no change in schedules on booking and that all flights booked will operate as planned.

"It is obvious that the low-cost model has proved extremely popular with customers over the last few years and I believe we are seeing an important shift in how people travel within Europe," easyJet chief executive Mr Ray Webster said.

Go chief executive Mr Ed Winter will oversee the integration of the two companies and will act as Go's chief executive until then.

"Once we have the plans in place, we will announce them and advise our customers of any changes. But until then it's business as usual - which is low fares to some of the most popular destinations in Europe," he said.
