The Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (PGAN) has suspended its former director and another member following allegations that Nigerian migrants had obtained Irish and British visas by masquerading as professional golfers.
Earlier this month six Nigerians were due to take part in British Open pre-qualifying at Co Louth. None of the group reported for the scheduled tee times with their whereabouts a mystery.
In the end only 46 golfers played and the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) confirmed they would be making representations to the relevant golfing authorities in Nigeria about the absence of the players.
The scene was repeated at qualifying in Britain.
PGAN secretary-general Mike Alika said that ex-director Matthew Jacob and a professional golfer, Monday Ugiagbe, have been suspended while its committee conducts a month-long probe into the alleged scam.
