US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said today he did not recall being involved in talks on dismissing individual federal prosecutors, countering testimony to Congress yesterday by a former aide that he was involved in such discussions.

"I don't recall being involved in deliberations involving the question of whether or not a US attorney should or should not be asked to resign," he told reporters in Boston.

The dismissals have triggered calls for Mr Gonzales to resign. The administration contends they were justified, based largely on performance or policy differences, but critics charge they were politically motivated.
