Gardai in Cork are seeking witnesses to an assault on a "good samaritan" who intervened in a dispute among a group of men and women last Saturday night in a laneway off South Main Street.
The 27-year-old man, who initially saw two women fighting in the street which spilled over into Post Office Lane where a group of six men and four women were arguing, went over to see if he could help.
He was set upon and punched and kicked while on the ground.
The others ran away and when he stood up he had a slash wound on his face, believed to have been inflicted with a hobbyist's knife, which required almost 100 stitches.
