GREEN FLAGS, used to recognise environmental achievements, have been awarded to 20 primary schools in Co Dublin and Co Laois by Minister for the Environment John Gormley.

The schools chosen have all met the standard required by the Green Schools Programme, an international initiative which aims to encourage environmental awareness among children and good environmental management by schools.

More than 2,880 schools participate in the programme in Ireland, representing 67 per cent of all the schools in the State.

At the awards ceremony, Mr Gormley commended the pupils and staff of the schools for their achievements.
