The man was one of three people being treated for gunshot wounds after a policeman opened fire during Friday's running battles with anti-EU and anti-globalisation demonstrators on the streets of Gothenburg.

The two other casualties, a Swede and a German, were only slightly injured, hospital officials said.

A police officer who felt threatened by the rampaging crowd opened fire and injured all three, according to Gothenburg police.
