The Government is set to come under attack in the Dáil today after the scrapping of the controversial electronic voting system for the June elections.
The Government decided not to introduce the system last week after an independent commission recommended against it.
In a brief report on Friday, the Commission on Electronic Voting found that the security of the voting system could not be guaranteed in time for the elections to be held. The Commission is set to issue a full report in due course.
Electronic voting was to be used in the upcoming local and European elections on June 11th.
The Taoiseach faces questions in the Dáil at 2.30 p.m. The Minister for the Environment, Mr Cullen, who was responsible for the e-voting debacle faced calls last week for his resignation. Around €50 million has been spent on the electronic system.
Meanwhile, it is believed the Electoral Ammendment Bill, which allows for the use of e-voting, is set to pass through the Oireachtas this week, despite the Government U-turn. The Bill also sets up the Commission on a statutory or legal footing.
