The Government has announced new funding for a programme aimed at creating a new generation of volunteers.

Minister of State at the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Noel Ahern, announced the funding today of up to €200,000 a year for the next three years for the Young Social Innovators' (YSI) national showcase exhibition.

The YSI programme is aimed at 15- and 16-year-olds to encourage them to recognise social problems and get involved in trying to bring about change.

The showcase will take place on May 11th and 12th at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, with 1,800 students involved, 120 projects and 74 schools.

Speaking today, Mr Ahern said it was important for the State to support engagement by young people in volunteering.

"In a growing economy where standards of living have and continue to improve, volunteering activity is a necessary part of building and strengthening communities," he said. "This initiative has the potential to unlock many social benefits."

YSI Programme CEO Ms Rachel Collier has welcomed the Government's support, describing the funding as a significant step by the State in recognising the necessity to promote social awareness education in schools as the first step in creating a new generation of volunteers.
