The head of the Garda Traffic Policy Bureau, Chief Supt John O'Brien, has said he is confident the Government will provide the resources necessary to combat road deaths. His comments on additional funding for information technology systems came after a week in which 14 people were killed on Irish roads, bringing this year's death toll to 316.
Chief Supt O'Brien said while excellent equipment was available, additional resources were needed. Funding of up to £6 million would provide fixed speed cameras and the information technology system required to efficiently process the data.
It is hoped fixed cameras will be introduced on a pilot basis in the Louth-Meath division by the end of December in a joint venture between gardai and the National Roads Authority.
The Government had highlighted the need to tackle the rate of road accidents as a matter of urgency in its Road Safety Strategy and he was confident these resources would be supplied.
"These tragedies on our roads highlight the absolute need for a business approach to this problem," Chief Supt O'Brien said.
