The TUI President has said that TUI would not accept third level graduates correcting Junior Cert and Leaving Cert in a situation where the ASTI refused to do so.
Mr John MacGabhann, President of the TUI, told ireland.com this afternoon that although the issue had not been raised at the TUI's executive as yet, its position had been made clear last year when graduates were used to correct some Junior Cert papers.
"There is an executive meeting of the TUI next Wednesday when the issue is bound to come up," said Mr MacGabhann.
"Our position last year was that we cannot accept any system that will compromise the integrity of the exam system.
"While I don’t want to second-guess the decision of the executive, it is unlikely that in this regard there has been any changes since last year."
Mr MacGabhann also said that the TUI fully supported the ASTI’s position on refusing to enter discussions until the money docked from teacher’s pay before Christmas was refunded.
"We sent a letter to the Minister as early as December 8 detailing our position on this issue as soon as it had been mooted by the Minister.
"In the letter we explained that doing so would only ‘exacerbate an already fraught situation’ and that under no circumstance could the TUI accept such a solution.
"We are firmly behind our colleagues in the ASTI on this issue."
The TUI Executive will meet next Wednesday, two days before a joint meeting of the three main teachers unions.
