Great Irish Run in Dublin centrepiece of weekend

Olympic hopefuls are limbering up for tomorrow morning's Bupa Great Irish Run in the Phoenix Park.

Arch-rivals Sonia O'Sullivan and Catherina McKiernan are likely to produce a thriller finish in the women's title.

O'Sullivan was last year's decisive winner but for McKiernan, desperate to improve her performance ahead of her bid for an Olympic-qualifying standard at 10,000m, a win tomorrow would provide a much-needed confidence boost.

With most of Ireland's leading long and middle-distance men away training or preparing for marathon assignments, Australia's top distance runner, Craig Mottram, is the clear favourite for the men's title.

Mottram said he will be treating tomorrow's race as aggressively as he did the World Cross-country Championships, where he was the top non-African finisher in both the long- and short-course races.

The event is expected to attract over 3,000 people and substantial traffic restrictions will be in operation around the park for most of the morning.

Tonight, there's more rugby action to enjoy with Leinster taking on Glasgow in the Celtic League at Donnybrook tonight. Kick-off is at 7.30 pm.

Travelwise, the weekend Dart upgrade works will start on the line between Howth Junction and Howth. For the next seven weekends there will be no Darts between these two stations.

There are also no Dart services between Pearse Street Station and Greystones on Saturday or Sunday due to engineering works.

Weather this weekend will be blustery and showery with patchy sunshine. Daytime temperatures will range between 9 and 12 degrees while overnight temperatures will dip slightly lower with a risk of frost in some areas.
