United Nations - Argentina, Canada, Malaysia, Namibia and the Netherlands were elected by the UN General Assembly yesterday to two-year terms on the Security Council beginning on January 1st, 1999.

The result was a major setback for Greece, which had lobbied hard in a three-cornered contest with Canada and the Netherlands for one of the two seats reserved for members of the group of states called West European and Others. In the secret ballot, Canada obtained 131 votes and the Netherlands 122. Greece trailed with 87 votes.
