Iraq and the state of the health service are being discussed at today's Green Party's national convention.

Trevor Sargent TD who is the leader of the Green Party said today's convention would be a celebration of last year's electoral successes and also a planning forum for the local and European elections in 2004.

The Green Party increased their representation in the Dáil from two to six seats.

The Greens have been critical of the Government over its treatment of the Freedom of Information Act and its permission for the US military to use facilities at Shannon Airport.

Yesterday Trevor Sargent said: "What we need is transparency, transparency with regard to Freedom of Information and transparency regarding the current situation in Iraq.

The Green Party is disgusted with the Government for their complicity in facilitating the escalation of aggression against Iraq. 16 million people are starving due mainly to sanctions and our Government are still allowing the US military use Shannon Airport."

"The uncertainty over international trade caused by the crisis between the US and Iraq highlights the folly of the Irish Government that has created an economy, which is so exposed to global crises.

As a result, Ministers are afraid to uphold international law under the UN Charter even when gross violations of human rights are taking place as a result of sanctions against the Iraqi people."
