The Green Party has launched a "join the dots" postcard campaign to persuade the Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, that the two Luas lines should be linked in the centre of Dublin.

The campaign, launched by Green TDs Mr Ciaran Cuffe and Mr Eamon Ryan in Dublin yesterday, involves distribution of thousands of pre-addressed postcards which members of the public sign and then post to the Minister. The cards urge him to "join the dots" and connect the Sandyford and Tallaght lines in the centre of Dublin.

"What is the point of going to all this expense and disruption if you are not prepared to join the lines and offer Dubliners a proper integrated transport system," Mr Cuffe asked.

Mr Ryan, the party spokesman on transport, added: "Traffic flows through College Green have been greatly reduced following traffic changes at the bottom of Dawson Street, South Great Georges Street and Parnell Street. Using some of the redundant road space for Luas would restore the area as our most spectacular civic space where the pedestrian rather than the car dominates."

The cards will be distributed in the city centre and are also available from the Green Party Dublin offices in Fownes Street.
