A new guide to the natural history and heritage of north Leitrim has been published to draw attention to sites of interest which have often gone unnoticed in the past.
Information is included on legends, wildlife, architecture and historical events. The brochure focuses on 12 areas within north Leitrim such as Manorhamilton, Glencar, Kiltyclogher and Glenfarne.
The project was carried out by the North Leitrim Glens Tourism Co-op with funding from the EU peace and reconciliation fund. Some 10,000 copies of the eight-page brochure have been printed and 12 information panels have been erected at each location.
Space allows for only basic details but readers could be prompted to delve deeper into topics such as the Spanish Armada, the Annals of the Four Masters which was written at Kinlough, the history of the Plantation or the adulterous goings-on of the O'Rourke chieftains in Dromahair in the 17th century.
Project co-ordinator Catherine O'Keefe said that until now there had been very little sign posting or literature to tell visitors about places of interest.
"One of the aims is to distribute people throughout the area and hopefully also distribute the economic benefit," she said. An effort was also made to include the "new Leitrim" which has seen an influx of artists.
Ms O'Keefe said she believed the project would entice visitors to the area. For information contact 072-56217.
