A national guide on fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions for all new car models was introduced yesterday by the Minister of State for the Environment, Mr Dan Wallace.
The Minister also put the first carbon dioxide label on the windscreen of a new car that is for sale - as well as posting up a list of the emissions for each car on a garage forecourt.
These are new requirements under an EU directive on consumer information on the environmental aspects of motoring. "The car labels will be of great benefit in enabling buyers to compare the fuel efficiency of new cars and factor the environmental impact of their purchase into their choices when buying a new vehicle."
The Minister has introduced regulations which will ensure the mandatory placing of labels on each model for sale. They come into operation on Friday. The prominent placing of posters listing all models is required and the guide must be made available "free of charge" at all car forecourts and showrooms.
Emissions of carbon dioxide from transport are expected to rise fastest of all sectors by 2010, Mr Wallace said.
Unlike "local" pollutants, such as oxides of nitrogen, unburned hydrocarbons and particulate matter, there is no vehicle technology or improved fuel quality which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions from an exhaust.
"Car users must realise the only way to reduce these emissions is through buying the most efficient car, fuel-efficient driving and minimising mileage where possible," the Minister said.
