Former Limerick county councillor, Mr Micahel Kelly remains in a critical but stable condition in Cork University hospital today.
There was no change in the condition of the controversial figure overnight after he was admitted to hospital in Limerick suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
He was later transferred to Cork for specialist treatment following emergency surgery in Limerick.
Cork University Hospital today said Mr Kelly's condition had not changed overnight and he was "critical but stable". There are no plans at this time for further surgery at the is time, it added.
Mr Kelly who was recently released form jail after serving six months for tax evasion and social welfare fraud, was found in a bedroom at his elderly mother's home at around 8.30 a.m.
He had sustained a single wound to his temple thought to have been from a handgun.
It is understood there was no sign of forced entry into the house when gardaí were called to the scene and that they were forced to obtain a search warrant before entering the house. The Garda Press Office would only confirm today that the matter was under investigation.
It has been reported locally that tension between the Kelly family and a criminal gang in the Southill area of the city has resurfaced since the former alderman's release from jail.
