A man shot dead his ex-wife in a busy terminal building at Stuttgart airport as she prepared to take a flight, police said yesterday.

The 31-year-old man fired several shots, killing his 25-year-old former wife and injuring a male bystander, a police spokeswoman from the nearby town of Esslingen said. Both the man and his ex-wife were of Serbian origin.

The woman had intended to take a flight for Pristina, the capital of Serbia's breakaway province of Kosovo.

The gunman fled after the shooting but was caught by police officers in the airport car park. The motive for the shooting was unclear.
