Ousted Haitian president Mr Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who fled into exile in Africa last month, plans to visit Haiti's Caribbean neighbor Jamaica soon, a Jamaican official said tonight.

Mr Wilton Dyer, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, said Mr Aristide was coming to Jamaica. Asked when, Dyer said, "soon." He gave no other details.

Mr Aristide fled Haiti on Feb. 29, driven out by armed rebels who were closing in on the Haitian capital and by US pressure to quit.

In exile in the Central African Republic, the former parish priest has insisted he is still president and has said he was abducted by US forces, a claim forcefully denied by Washington.
