The mostly eagerly anticipated computer game in years goes on sale tomorrow with up to 20 stores around the country opening up at midnight to satisfy demand.

Halo 3is a futuristic first-person shooter developed by Microsoft subsidiary Bungie for the Xbox 360. It will be unveiled in Ireland by Richard Dean Anderson, better known for his roles in MacGyverand Stargate SG:1.

A series of midnight openings will take place across the country as Irish retailers seek to meet the demand for the game. GameStop is opening 14 of its 46 Irish stores at midnight, including its branch in Dublin's St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre.

Pre-orders for Halo 3have passed one million globally, making it the fastest pre-selling console game in history.

Irish retailers report that pre-orders for the game are running at twice the rate of the previous title in the series, while Microsoft has said production of the disc has reached 81 a second as they prepare for what is expected to be the biggest console game launch ever.

Marketing and localisation work for Halo 3has been done from Microsoft's Irish HQ in Sandyford for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
