Former Conservative MP Mr Neil Hamilton and his wife Christine today described allegations about them splashed across the British press as "a complete tissue of lies".
The couple again vehemently denied the claims that they were involved in the alleged rape of a woman and branded the affair "a public scandal".
Mr Hamilton said he was mystified that police had taken the woman's claims seriously and said it was a "great injustice" that she could remain anonymous while their faces were splashed all over the front pages.
"All I would like to say is this - this morning's newspapers make it absolutely clear that these allegations are a complete tissue of lies and fabrications," Mr Hamilton told reporters and TV crews outside his London home.
"The mystery is that the police have taken them seriously enough to arrest two totally innocent people before they have heard their side of the story.
The Hamiltons told police they were hosting a dinner party on May 5th, the night they were alleged to have been involved in the sexual assault.
Transcripts of their interviews with detectives were published in the Mail on Sunday after the couple apparently made their copies of the tapes available to the newspaper.
Mr and Mrs Hamilton were held for five hours at Barkingside Police Station on Friday after voluntarily submitting themselves for questioning about the alleged rape, which was said to have taken place in a flat in Ilford, east London.
They were later released on police bail.
