The Government is to grant €78 million to 740 schools around the State for maintenance this summer, it was announced today.
The Summer Works Scheme will benefit 461 primary schools, 268 post-primary schools and 11 post-leaving cert colleges.
The money is intended to be spent on projects such as gas, electrical and mechanical upgrades; refurbishment of science labs or home economics rooms; roof replacement and repairs; window replacement; toilet upgrades; structural improvements and access works.
Works will include the provision or refurbishment of science labs in 24 post-primary schools and home economic rooms in 12 schools. Forty-three primary schools have also been earmarked for playground improvements.
Minister for Education Mary Hanafin said the work is undertaken during the summer to ensure minimal disruption.
"This scheme has proven to be a great success allowing schools to upgrade facilities and undertake significant works which are of huge benefit to the whole school community," the Minister said.
