The Tánaiste will discuss cost-cutting proposals aimed at saving 600 jobs at Irish Fertilizer Industries (IFI) with the company¿s management this morning.

The depressed market for fertiliser products means the survival of the company's three plants in Cork, Arklow and Belfast, is under threat.

Unions representing workers at the plants expressed "grave concern" that a survival plan for the company would be rejected by the Ms Harney.

The company is jointly owned by the State and the chemical company ICI. A request by the company for a €25 million cash injection from its shareholders was refused in July.
