Ireland's Padraig Harrington shot a seven-under-par 67 to move into a tie for second after the third round of the Buick Open in Michigan.
Two birdie bursts game Harrington his best round of the event to date _ he opened with consecutive 67s _ but he still fell further behind leader Kenny Perry.
Harrington birdied three holes out of four from the fourth to be out in three-under-par 33 and four in a row from the 13 to move onto 17 under par for the tournament. He is tied with Jim Furyk but five behind Perry, whose second straight 64 widened his lead.
The American's round included a stunning eagle and a 29 on the back nine _ one day after shooting a 29 on the front half of the Warwick Hills Golf Club course.
He picked up five strokes over the final four holes, including two at the par-five 16th.
"I just want to win," said the 41-year-old, who has three career victories.
"If it's setting a tournament record or not setting a tournament record, if it gets the job done and wins the golf tournament, that is all that matters to me.
"It has been (six) years since I have won and I am really hungry to win again."
Had Perry put together Friday's front nine and Saturday's back nine, he would have set a scoring record.
"(I've) never posted two rounds so low in my life back-to-back," he said.
Furyk, the first round co-leader, shot a bogey-free 66 but has been unable to keep pace with Perry over the last two days.
However, he could move into the top 10 of the Ryder Cup standings _ and an automatic berth on the team _ with a strong finish here.
Furyk and Harrington are one shot better than Tway, Chris DiMarco and Justin Leonard, the 1996 champion who climbed into the hunt with a 63 that included 10 birdies.
