Britain's Prince Harry passed university entrance exams in geography and art, but will join the army instead of going to university, his father's office said yesterday.
His grades - a D in geography and a B in art - fell short of the requirements of top British universities.
Harry's father, Prince Charles, got a B in history and a C in French in 1967 when he took his A-levels, the advanced final exams British teenagers sit before leaving school.
Older brother William gained a C in biology, A in geography and B in history of art. The very best candidates gain five A-levels at grade A. The worst pass grade is an E.
Harry (18) will take a year off before applying to the prestigious Sandhurst military academy, which trains military officers.
"I am very proud of Harry," Prince Charles said in a statement. "He has worked hard for these examinations and I am very pleased with today's results." Harry spent five years at Eton College, joining in 1998, a year after the death of his mother, Princess Diana.
His academic performance was eclipsed by his sporting success and he represented the school in rugby, cricket and polo. He also joined the school's cadet force and was awarded the highest rank of cadet officer in May.
Royal aides say details of Harry's gap year will be released next month.- (Reuters)
