The removal of the remains of west Limerick poet Michael Hartnett took place last night in his native Newcastle West.
The removal was from Reidy's Funeral Home to the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
The 58-year-old member of Aosdana wrote in Irish and English and was also a translator.
In a tribute, fellow poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice, from Moy vane, Co Kerry, said "He was a major Irish poet and had a national stature.

"He was a major influence on my writing and he taught me virtually everything I knew".
His funeral today is expected to be attended by leading literary figures.
