Speaking after his father's collapse a fortnight ago, Mr Seán Haughey TD, said he had not suffered a heart attack but had a serious cardiac condition, known as an irregularity of the heart.

In a hospital statement Mr Haughey was said to have had a "serious life-threatening cardiac condition" which required him to be sedated for ventilation.

After one night in intensive care Mr Haughey was moved to Beaumont’s coronary unit where he has spent the last two weeks under the care of Prof Eoin O'Brien and anaesthetist Dr Brian Lamont.

The former Taoiseach has been in poor health since being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1995.

Six months ago a medical report given to the Moriarty tribunal said he was terminally ill with prostate cancer. As a result the inquiry agreed to hear further evidence from Mr Haughey in private which it had been doing prior to his collapse.
