A drug trafficker whose alleged collusion with gardaí is currently under investigation, had a haulage licence he used for smuggling withdrawn, The Irish Times understands.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission yesterday sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in relation to Kieran Boylan, who is suspected of receiving favourable treatment in exchange for giving information on other criminals.
Gardaí knew that he had been using his haulage business for smuggling.
Yesterday, the office of the Ombudsman confirmed it had sent a file to the DPP in relation to a “named individual” but refused to be drawn on the identity.
It is also understood that following the introduction of a statutory instrument in 2009 prohibiting those with serious criminal histories from working as hauliers, Mr Boylan’s licence was withdrawn by the Department of Transport.
As well as possible criminal action against gardaí, the DPP will examine whetherconvictions garnered as a result of Mr Boylan’s information might be unsafe.
