HAVANA - Peru's President Alberto Fujimori said yesterday Cuba has agreed to offer asylum to Marxist rebels holding 72 hostages in Lima should Japan and Peru formally request it.
Mr Fujimori made a surprise stop in Havana yesterday shopping for a country willing to grant asylum to the Tupac Amaru rebels holed up in the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima with 72 high profile hostages, including Mr Fujimori's brother, Pedro.
The rebels seized the embassy residence and hostages on December 17th last year, demanding the release of some 440 jailed comrades, and a softening in Mr Fujimori's market oriented economic policies to help Peru's poor.
