Health warning over duck eggs

There have been 18 cases of food poisoning relating to duck eggs in the State this year.

There have been 18 cases of food poisoning relating to duck eggs in the State this year.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said it is investigating after five new cases of Salmonella Typhimurium DT8 were discovered following the consumption of duck eggs.

In a statement the authority said they are looking for the source of the latest outbreak.

The FSAI advised people to thoroughly cook eggs and egg products and to cease using raw duck eggs in any dishes that will not be cooked thoroughly prior to eating.

In light of the new cases the authority also warned caterers of the need for strict procedures to be followed at all times to avoid cross contamination between raw and cooked foods.

Symptoms of Salmonella Typhimurium DT8 include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever and anyone with these symptoms is advised to contact their doctor for advice.
