A TOTAL of €1 million is being provided for 10 PhD students to carry out cancer research at NUI Galway.
The money is being provided through a joint initiative by Cancer Care West and the Galway University Foundation. The first three students have started this week.
The Cancer Care West Hardiman scholars will perform translational and clinical research in the area of cancer biology, therapeutics and all aspects of oncology at NUI Galway and the associated University Hospital Galway.
NUI Galway has specialised in recent years in prostate and breast cancer research, both of which are more prevalent in populations in the west of Ireland.
In both prostate and breast cancer, researchers at NUI Galway are attempting to develop treatments which will go some way to treating those patients who respond poorly to existing therapies.
