The Community Games was founded by Dublin man Joseph Connolly in 1967 as a response to a lack of leisure time activities for young people. The first games were held in 1968.
Roy Keane, Sonia O'Sullivan, Eamon Coghlan, Michael Carruth and Niall Quinn have all taken part in the Community Games.
Actor Colin Farrell won a gold medal in the Dublin Community Games while representing Castleknock when they won the Boys Relay U17 (4x100m) in 1992.
In the individual events (including relay races), one competitor from each of the 32 counties of Ireland qualifies for the National Finals.
In the team events, one team from each of the four provinces qualifies for the National Finals.
Twenty sports are featured in the Community Games, but the games also include art, chess, draughts, choir, culture corner, model making and a variety show.
