LIFESTYLE Q&A: Peter Dowdall, gardener and gardening writer
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
I have a healthy lifestyle in that I work outside in the fresh air, I am constantly moving, gardening and walking with work, all of which is good. However, as I find myself getting older, I do notice myself developing bad habits and making less time in the evenings for physical exercise like walking and swimming.
How often do you exercise?
Work keeps me exercising every day, however, I haven’t been to a gym since February and this for me is bad news. If I as much as look at something that I shouldn’t eat I will put on the kilos. Getting back into the habit of an hour or so physical exercise a few times a week is a must now.
Do you get your five a day?
I’m pretty good at getting the five pieces as I am very aware of it. I find it easier in the summer as there is so much fresh fruit available. I love salads and I grow a huge amount of my own salad and fruit produce. However, during the winter it can be more difficult. A good bowl of vegetable soup is a good way to do it, I think.
Do you worry?
No, not really. I might worry on a very basic level about things to do with business, etc, but I don’t stress out or worry frantically or anything. How Munster are going to replace some of their older players is one of my biggest worries at the moment.
What do you do to relax?
I had cancer twice during my 20s and I learned a lot at the time about deep relaxation methods to help your body to heal itself. I still practise these methods. I find it is very good for me and very pleasurable. I love a nice meal out or an evening in Dennehy’s Bar in Cork as a way of relaxing.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
I am ashamed to say that I smoke.
