Reading labels: Kelkin, the food manufacturer and distributor, has announced it is to run a series of food label reading classes designed to help consumers better understand the sometimes confusing nutritional information that is provided on food labels.
The introduction of the classes is in response to the current consumer demand for easy-to-read nutritional information coupled with increasing demand for improved on-pack information.
The classes are part of a Kelkin consumer nutritional information campaign for 2005.
Aveen Bannon, the Kelkin nutritionist, has been working with Kelkin.
"My partnership with Kelkin reflects the changing market in Ireland more and more Irish companies are providing a dedicated nutritionist to respond to consumer queries".
Dara O'Donnell of Kelkin comments "Traditionally food labelling gave the minimum of information required, however, companies such as Kelkin are adapting their labelling with the consumer specifically in mind."
The class content will cover different standard ingredients, including processed and healthier options; will highlight the daily-recommended intake and portion sizes; and teach consumers how to incorporate this information into a daily diet.
There will also be a question and answer session where people can discuss nutritional concerns that they may have, helping to dispel some nutritional myths.
Those interested in attending the one-off evening season classes can register for one of three class dates by e-mailing labellingclasses@kelkin.ie, or by logging onto www. Kelkin.ie.
Consumers can pick from three initial dates as follows: Tuesday, May 10th, 2005, 6.30pm to 8.30pm, Tuesday, July 12th, 2005, 6.30pm to 8.30pm, or Tuesday, August 9th, 2005, 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
They take place at the Mespil Hotel, Mespil Road, Dublin 4 - no charge applies.
