DOG FEARS: Fear of dogs is based on either having had a bad experience with a dog or even the idea of such an experience, according to psychotherapist Áine Tubridy, who is running a workshop for dog phobics on July 15th from 6.30pm-9pm.
Cost €50. Tubridy, who is the author of When Panic Attacks (Newleaf), will also give a day-long seminar on how to control and eliminate panic attacks on July 16th from 10am-5pm. Cost €100. Both sessions take place at the Institute of Psychosocial Medicine, 2 Eden Park, Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin. Tel: 01 2800084.
DUAL SENSORY PROBLEMS: New US research has shown that up to 20 per cent of people aged 70 and over suffer from both hearing and sight problems. This dual sensory impairment results in poorer functional ability. Difficulties with activities of daily living such as cooking, shopping and using the telephone are common and have a direct bearing on the individuals' ability to live independently.
FEMALE WEIGHT: When female anorexia nervosa sufferers regain the pounds, the weight does not go back where it came from. A study of women treated for the eating disorder found that they had a significantly greater waist to hip circumference ratio and more fat around the trunk area when compared with women who did not have anorexia nervosa.
