The study looked at the use of over the counter insecticide products and compared the results with fine tooth combing of wet hair using a specially developed "Bug Buster" kit.

Wet hair combing was found to be four times more effective than chemical products for eliminating head lice (57 per cent cure rate versus 13 per cent), indicating that wet combing is a viable and less toxic alternative to over the counter insecticide treatments.

ORAL REPLACEMENT: The use of rectal diazepam in the emergency treatment of children with seizures may be replaced by a drug called midazolam, given under the tongue, which has been found to work quicker, better and for longer than diazepam.

A large trial which was carried out in four A&E departments in the UK found that the new drug is not only more effective but is easier to administer and more acceptable than rectal treatment with diazepam.

SUPPLEMENT DANGER: Vitamin E, in supplement form, is taken by more than one third of the adult US population.

This is in spite of the fact that the antioxidant has been discredited in its use to prevent heart disease, cancer or dementia.

According to researchers, using in excess of 400 IU daily of the supplement may actually increase mortality.

Researchers warn that people should be aware that the supplement will not prevent chronic illness or promote longevity.

Taken in high doses, it may actually endanger health.
