Me and My Stress

Main cause of stress

Main cause of stress

The lead-up to the film festival has been pretty stressful. You choose the films, get the brochures out and then wait for people to walk into the box office. There are certain films that some will like and others will loathe. Dublin audiences are good at coming to you and saying "that was a piece of crap" or "that was life-changing stuff".

Then, one day after the festival, I rejoin the ranks of the unemployed. Apart from that, I'm writing a book on Leicester City Football Club and I have to finish that by mid-June.

And more than likely, I'll be moving house, depending on where the next work is. All stressful things.

The 89th minute of a Leicester City match is also very stressful - and I'm not joking when I say that.

Coping with stress

I smoke too much, drink too much and probably eat too much. All the old comforts, everything to excess.

I've had a few health scares over the years - I had a minor stroke when I was in the British Film Institute but I pulled through that successfully.

I can't say it changed my life but it does give you a bit of perspective and you tell yourself not to get too stressed.

Pressures in the film world

Films can be pretty stressful, but more so for the people who make them. I ran a cinema once and if you are not getting the punters in, it can be worrying.

Of course it's difficult trying to judge what the public will like but, without being arrogant, I've spent a number of years in the film business and have accumulated certain taste and am being paid to exercise it.

Whatever about stress, it's still the classic thing - if you work in this business, you get to see films for free.
