Geraldine Hunter, a specialised kinesiologist in Cork, uses the holistic therapy to balance people's energy, both physical and emotional.

I take my first client at 9am. My last appointment is at 5pm so my day finishes between 6 and 8pm. I work from home in Midleton, Co Cork. I also teach kinesiology at weekends and some evenings during the week at the Kinesiology College of Ireland, also based in Midleton.

Kinesiology is all about muscle testing. It's an holistic approach to balancing a person's energy. Blocks and imbalances that weaken physical and emotional energy levels are retained in the muscles, so by gently testing the muscles these imbalances can be discovered.

If I test muscle it gives me a response or an electrical impulse that provides information about the body. Electrical impulses are the brain's way of sending signals and sometimes these signals can get scrambled causing imbalance.

It's a hands-on therapy. I place my hands on the client and use their muscles as an indicator. I can read a response from any muscle in the body.

A session may take up to an hour.

When I first treat a client I take a detailed history, a holistic history, to see why they are suffering pain and to treat the person as a whole. It may be caused by stress or bad diet, work problems, lack of exercise or medication. I never know how I'll treat anybody until I have him or her on my couch and I get the biofeedback from the muscle testing.

I treat a range of people, from tiny babies to people in their 90s, and I treat a wide range of illnesses from serious diseases like cancer or arthritis to people who are just feeling tired.

It's a very nice job because I never know what I'm going to do from one day to the next.
