Personal/family:Married with four children, Conor, Claire, Danny, Darragh.

What figure from the world of medicine or health do you most admire?

I admire Banting and Best, the professor and student team whose translational research, based on laboratory science, produced the therapeutic miracle, insulin. I also admire doctors such as David Hickey who combined clinical and sporting excellence.

What other career might you have chosen?

Sport, but sadly I had no talent.

If you could grant three wishes for the health service, what would they be?

I would create a government which has the courage to resource a modern health service, with equality of access to excellent care, even if it needs appropriate taxation. I would ensure they have the wisdom to allow it to be run by healthcare professionals rather than bureaucrats. Finally, I would create a national pituitary unit based in Beaumont.

What is your greatest fear?

My children becoming ill.

Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?

No.

When or where are you happiest?

In Parkhead, watching Celtic beat Rangers, the Island Golf Club or Achill Island holidays watching my children play sport.

How do you cope with stress?

Badly. I try to control my temper, mainly by fist clenching and teeth gritting. Good red wine helps, but exercise is the key. I also avoid articles by Kevin Myers.

What is the trait you most admire in yourself?

My capacity for hard work.

What is the trait you most dislike in yourself?

My temper.

Do you use alternative or complementary medicine or therapies?

No.

Who or what makes you laugh?

Billy Connolly and Father Ted.

What is your motto?

Be the best you can be.

What is your favourite TV or radio programme?

The Sunday Game, anything on Celtic TV and radio shows with Eamon Dunphy.
