Personal/family: Married to Yvonne, with two daughters, Sona and Nyree.
What figure from the world of medicine or health do you most admire? Barry J Marshall and J Robin Warren for identifying the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
What other career might you have chosen? Acting, but one of my daughters is at it now.
If you were granted three wishes for the health service, what would they be? Let patients see the specialist directly without the need to see their GP first; educate the medical profession to include alternative therapies in their practices; and reduce the waste of resources.
What is your greatest fear? Something happening to my daughters.
Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one? Yes and yes. I was not the matron's favourite though.
When or where are you happiest? With friends and family and a bottle of wine.
How do you cope with stress? I don't, so I die a little at a time.
What is the trait you most admire in yourself? I always cut my own path through the jungle.
What is the trait you most dislike in yourself? Because of all the cutting, I am often late getting there.
Do you use alternative medicine or therapies? Yes. I take multivitamins and some herbals.
Who or what makes you laugh? Jokes my sister and mother tell me.
What is your motto? Today is as good a day to die as any.
What is your favourite TV or radio programme? Morning Ireland.
What books would you bring to a desert island? Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and the complete works of William Saroyan.
